  • How to install NCBI BLAST 2.2.27+ on mac OS X 10.8.1

    Dear all,

I am trying to install the latest BLAST+ 2.2.27+ following the instruction on the following page which is provided from NCBI :

Here, the #.#.# represents the version number of the current release, CHIP indicates the chipset, and OS indicates the operating system. Equivalent .rpm and .dmg files for Linux and Mac OSX are also available. These archives and their target platforms are listed in the table below.

However, i am now completely lost, as they mention on the page that:

To do BLAST searches on platforms lacking precompiled blast+ package will require compiling the BLAST source code. The source code file, "ncbi-blast-#.#.#+-src" in either zip or gziped tar format, is available from the same ftp directory as blast+ packages. Questions and feedbacks on source code compilation should be addressed to: [email protected].

This is the first time for me to deal with local BLAST, and i know that my system is lacking the precompiled blast+. I want to know how to compile the BLAST+ and then configure the BLAST. When i try to configure it as it is mentioned on the page above, all the time i receive error messages such as: No such file or directory, or command not found.

    ANY SUGGESTIONS OR HELP PLEASE!

    Thanks very much.

Unless you have a strong reason to do so, don't bother compiling BLAST+ yourself - just use the pre-compiled binaries from the NCBI. They work fine and it is far easier - just decompress the tar-ball, and move/copy the binaries to somewhere on your path:
    ftp://ftp.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/blast/exe...blast+/LATEST/

      Choosing Between NGS and qPCR
      by seqadmin

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) are essential techniques for investigating the genome, transcriptome, and epigenome. In many cases, choosing the appropriate technique is straightforward, but in others, it can be more challenging to determine the most effective option. A simple distinction is that smaller, more focused projects are typically better suited for qPCR, while larger, more complex datasets benefit from NGS. However,...

      Non-Coding RNA Research and Technologies
      by seqadmin

Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) do not code for proteins but play important roles in numerous cellular processes including gene silencing, developmental pathways, and more. There are numerous types including microRNA (miRNA), long ncRNA (lncRNA), circular RNA (circRNA), and more. In this article, we discuss innovative ncRNA research and explore recent technological advancements that improve the study of ncRNAs.
