NEWBIE question: does the 5' adapter mean forward primer?

No, the adapters are not the primers.
5' adapters are what you ligate to your sample sequence (dna, cdna, srna etc) at the 5' end, and 3' adapter at the 3' end. The primers would then anneal to your adapters during PCR amplification.
