We are seeking a motivated bioinformatics analyst to play a key role in the pioneering research program of The Epigenetics Center of the Institute for Basic Biomedical Sciences at Johns Hopkins University. The Epigenetics Center houses an outstanding team of multidisciplinary investigators exploring the epigenetic basis of development and disease.

    Essential Job Functions:
    • Work in collaboration with scientists and core staff to address research questions involving the analysis of next-generation sequencing data.
    • Design, build, maintain and run software pipelines for aligning and performing statistical analyses on very large collections of DNA and RNA sequencing data.
    • Identify problems encountered during data release process and troubleshoot these problems.
    • Responsible for preparation of data files and statistical reports for project release.
    • Identify systematic problems with data related to lab or data cleaning methods, software, or personnel.
    • Contribute to the local protocol development and the preparation of research grant applications in the collaborative setting.
    • Contribute to the local protocol development and the preparation of research grant applications in the collaborative setting.
    • Write computer codes in a procedural-oriented computer language to accomplish the actual statistical analysis; select the appropriate computing environment (PC, minicomputer, or mainframe).
    • Interpret and analyze the results of statistical analyses.
    • Discuss with colleagues, investigators, and supervisor the need for any additional analyses and/or special methodologic needs.
    • Prepare written reports of statistical analyses, including relevant statistical theory, references, methods, results, and conclusions.
    • Maintain appropriate systems for database associated management.
    • Keep abreast of technical and academic resources related to the methodology of statistical analyses.

    Laboratory Operations:
    • Interfaces with co-investigator and collaborators in providing laboratory data—including format design, data systems, etc.
    • Develops and maintains research project laboratory databases.

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
