  • Systems Architect Position at UNC Chapel Hill

Systems Architect at UNC Chapel Hill

    Job Description:

The UNC High-throughput Sequencing Facility (HTSF) is looking for a Systems Architect to lead the informatics component of this core and coordinate strategic informatics efforts across participating units on campus. The Systems Architect will understand and define the system architectural plans at a fine level of detail, provide consistency in the architectural plans over time, and maintain a clear project plan that ensures all research projects and their respective informatics teams are aware of the components and interfaces that will be implemented and the timeline for implementation. The Systems Architect will promote the development of an “enterprise” scale infrastructure that will be robust and extensible and takes advantage of the significant investment that has been made into shared computing resources at UNC. The Systems Architect will lead the integration into the system architecture of new algorithms and approaches developed by collaborators and outside groups. They will do this by managing a software development and implementation team, a systems administration team, and an outreach and engagement team (for facilitating interactions with researchers). The system architect and team will provide guidance to outside groups by developing “Informatics Maturation Model” for the HTSF, which will provide an operational model for informatics on campus. The Systems Architect will also arbitrate decisions on infrastructure and systems management.

    Education and experience:

A BS in Computer Science or an otherwise relevant field of study is required; a M.S. or Ph.D. is strongly preferred but not required. The candidate is required to have demonstrated experience in the design and deployment of IT systems used in life sciences research, ideally including experience working with and evaluating Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS). The candidate is required to have a background that includes software design and development, ideally in both application and web development, using modern languages and programming methodologies. Experience with high performance computing systems and large-scale data systems will be viewed favorably. The candidate should have experience working with next-generation sequencing technology, although experience in other areas of life science research will be considered. The candidate should have experience in managing IT or software projects, experience leading small teams of developers, experience in personnel management, and experience working closely with users and researchers in defining and gathering requirements. Consideration will be given to candidates with less than 7 years of experience in required area if the candidate can demonstrate success in developing IT solutions in the life sciences.
