Researcher Computational Biology
Job description:
Next generation sequencing technologies are revolutionizing genetics by allowing us to sequence the genomes of many different individual organisms in a population and to observe their complex coding and non-coding transcriptomes and regulatory events under many conditions. Powerful genetic tools such as QTL mapping, large scale polymorphism libraries, RNAi and high content phenotyping allow the dissection of causal relationships.
These tasks create exciting opportunities for computational scientists to develop novel methods in statistics, signal processing and mathematical modeling. Our team of computational scientists, in the Genome Biology unit of the EMBL in Heidelberg, is tightly integrated in loops of experimentation, data analysis, model building, interpretation and refined experimentation.
Qualifications and experience:
The ideal candidate has a PhD in a quantitative or computational discipline; interest in multidisciplinary work covering statistics, mathematical modeling, genetics and molecular biology; competence in scientific computing and computer programming; interest in biology and its experimental technologies. A good publication record (which can include academic papers and scientific software) is expected. This position requires ability for teamwork, cross-discipline communication skills, reliability, attention to detail and effective time management. The working language is English.

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...-

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...-
