    Bioinformatics summer internship

Boehringer Ingelheim Vienna is seeking a Bioinformatics Summer Intern to provide support for our drug discovery efforts at our Vienna, Austria location. The intern will work with a bioinformatics scientist on one of our ongoing oncology programs, providing the opportunity to gain valuable scientific experience and learn more about research within a pharmaceutical company.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

Under general supervision, the candidate will perform well-defined research assignments to improve and extend an in-house computational analysis pipeline for next generation sequencing data.

    Main responsibilities for the student:

Writes software and uses analytic tools to solve specific scientific problems related to Next Generation Sequencing data.
Identifies and evaluates open source packages appropriate to scientific project.
Reads scientific publications relevant to work and summarizes key points.
Attends weekly bionformatics group meetings and periodically presents progress on assigned research project.

Presents work at end of internship.

    REQUIREMENTS

Exposure to molecular biology concepts is important as well as a familiarity with computational genomics is preferred.

Qualified applicants must have taken at least 2 years of computer science and biology courses.
Strong verbal and written communication skills a plus.

    SCIENTIFIC/TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE

Unix/Linux experience is required as well as an ability to program in scripting language such as Perl or Python. Familiarity with R, PHP, or Java a plus.

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist on Modified Bases...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
