Pacific Biosciences is seeking a Principal Scientist / Sr. Staff Scientist to join a dynamic team developing next generation DNA sequencing technology. This position is in a fast-paced environment, interacting with R&D and Process Development scientists from a variety of backgrounds. The selected individual will be working toward the development of new products for the Pacific Biosciences SMRT™ sequencing system. This will include working cross functionally to design, plan and execute experiments to evaluate, optimize and integrate sequencing reagents, instrumentation and hardware with the goal of delivering system level improvements to Pacific Biosciences sequencing systems. The position primarily involves hands-on laboratory work and data analysis. Presentation of results at both weekly group and weekly department meetings will be required. The individual will share some responsibilities for laboratory and reagent management.
Position Requirements
• PhD or equivalent experience in Biophysics, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Chemistry or related scientific field
• Should be able to perform custom analysis of large datasets (R, Matlab, JMP)
• Technically proficient in general laboratory practices (biochemistry/molecular biology)
• Familiarity with Bioinformatics workflows is desirable
• Practical understanding of the kinetics of enzymatic reactions is important to this role
• Must have excellent problem solving/trouble shooting skills
• Working knowledge of fluorescence and its application would be helpful
• Experience working with complex, prototype instrumentation a plus
• Attention to detail, careful record-keeping, a high level of organization, and good verbal and written communication skills are required
• Able to manage several projects simultaneously
• Self-starter who can operate with minimal supervision
• The successful candidate will enjoy working closely with others as a member of an interdisciplinary team
