Clinical Bioinformatician and Training Officer
NOWGEN/National Genetics Reference Lab
Band 6 £25,528 - £34,189
Fixed Term
Ref: RES-4486
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated individual to join us in a key role and not only develop unique knowledge and skills, but get involved in crucial work that has an immediate impact within healthcare.
NGRL and Nowgen support NHS genetic services with training and resources in the field of bioinformatics. New technologies in genetics are revolutionising healthcare and so the need for high quality bioinformatic skills and training is vital to the industry. This provides a unique opportunity for the right candidate to develop this role and steer it to suit organisational needs. Focusing on Nowgen, you will work with the training team to further develop the training materials and courses developed by Nowgen and NGRL into deliverable material, as well as helping to develop new course ideas and materials. Working with NGRL's development team, you will implement programme development and maintenance for resources such SNPCheck and the Diagnostic Mutation Database (DMuDB). This is an important, interesting and varied field to work in, with plenty of scope for development, and we will reward your dedication with opportunities for ongoing training, as well as a PDP and excellent benefits.
Naturally a role of this kind requires a specialist set of skills. You must be experienced with programming (Java, Perl), database development and administration, and bioinformatic tools and resources, specifically the latter’s software development, testing, introduction, maintenance and support. You will have a BSc in an appropriate biological science, plus a relevant qualification or experience in bioinformatics, whilst knowledge of molecular biology and clinical molecular genetics is essential. As you will be teaching others, experience of training, teaching or lecturing is crucial, supported by good communications skills, and you will know how to make the most of this unique opportunity.
