  • Bioinformatician, CPC-GENE

    Position: Bioinformatician

    Site: MaRS Centre, Toronto

    Department: Informatics and Bio-computing

    Reports To: Principal Investigator,Informatics & Bio-computing (Dr. P. Boutros)

    Salary: Commensurate with level of experience

    Hours: 35 Hrs/week

    Status: Full-time, Contract (1-3 years)

    The Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR) is seeking a Bioinformatician to work with the Informatics and Bio-computing team.

    Are you an expert in next-generation sequencing? The Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR) is seeking a talented Bioinformatician to focus on the analysis of large next-gen sequencing datasets. The successful candidate will have an extensive interest in large-data problems, and an in-depth knowledge of data-handling. This position also involves a very substantial analysis component. The successful candidate will be working closely with systems administrators, statisticians, PhD students, and post-doctoral associates on:

    • Optimization and parallelization of algorithms for the analysis of genome-sequencing data;
    • Integration of diverse datasets into unified statistical models;
    • Automating procedures for pipeline evaluation and assessment;
    • Automation of routine programming and data-analysis tasks; and
    • Downstream data-modeling, including pathway analysis and clinical association studies.

    The successful candidate will be working on the Canadian Prostate Cancer Genome Network (CPC-GENE), a project studying 500 prostate cancer patients. Via this project, the research team is generating multiple independent genomic analyses, including mRNA and DNA microarrays, RNA-seq, whole genome-sequencing (PacBio and Illumina Hi-Seq), and some limited RNAi functional screen data. Rich clinical annotation is available on these samples. Analyses are performed on cutting-edge IT infrastructure including a multi-petabyte storage system and a >6,500-core compute farm.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • University degree in computational biology, engineering, mathematics, computer sciences or molecular biology
    • Strong background with Unix/Linux tools and administration required
    • Exposure to next-generation sequencing data required
    • Experience in high performance computing on a large scale cluster using Sun Grid Engine (SGE)
    • Experience in software and database programming (e.g., R, Perl, SQL)
    • Experience working with test-driven programming and version control preferred
    • Proven experience with bioinformatics resources and/or databases preferred
    • Statistical background in machine-learning, survival or Bayesian techniques is an asset
    • Knowledge of molecular and/or cancer biology is an asset

    OICR is an innovative cancer research institute located in the MaRS Centre in the Discovery District in downtown Toronto. OICR is addressing significant challenges in cancer research with multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional teams. New discoveries to prevent, detect and treat cancer will be moved from the bench to practical applications in patients. The OICR team is growing quickly. We are innovative, dedicated professionals who bring expertise to each of our roles. We are looking for individuals interested in being part of a culture of excellence that will result in Ontario being recognized internationally as a leading jurisdiction for cancer research.

    Launched in December 2005, OICR is an independent institute funded by the Government of Ontario through the Ministry of Research and Innovation.

    Recent Advances in Sequencing Analysis Tools
    by seqadmin

    The sequencing world is rapidly changing due to declining costs, enhanced accuracies, and the advent of newer, cutting-edge instruments. Equally important to these developments are improvements in sequencing analysis, a process that converts vast amounts of raw data into a comprehensible and meaningful form. This complex task requires expertise and the right analysis tools. In this article, we highlight the progress and innovation in sequencing analysis by reviewing several of the...

    Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

    The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...
