    Bioinformatics Officer

    Job No.:495889
    Area:UQ Diamantina Institute
    Salary (FTE):Advertised at multiple classifications
Work type:Full Time - Fixed Term
    Location:Brisbane

The University of Queensland Diamantina Institute was established in 2007 as the sixth research institute of The University of Queensland. The aim of the Institute is to develop a better understanding of the molecular and cellular basis of disease, and to translate that understanding into practical outcomes for patients. Based at the Translational Research Institute (TRI) at the Princess Alexandra Hospital teaching campus in Brisbane, the Institute has almost 270 researchers and students who work closely with clinicians in the areas of cancer, immunology and genomic medicine. UQDI is the largest partner in TRI, and is building major programs in Immunology, Cancer and Genomic Medicine research, with a particular focus on research aimed at development of new treatments. Details of the research interests of academic staff may be accessed on the Institute's web site at http://www.di.uq.edu.au/research.

The research group of Professor Matthew Brown at the University of Queensland Diamantina Institute is internationally renowned for the study of complex diseases. The group has over 30 researchers with expertise in a broad range of fields including genetics, bioinformatics, and molecular biology with access to world class facilities and cutting edge technologies. It has an extensive network of national and international collaborators and has constructed a number of large and unique disease cohorts. It includes one of the largest sequencing and genotyping centers in the southern hemisphere and combines these discovery tools with mouse models and functional assays to study the underlying cause of disease and find new therapies. This research group has published a broad range of Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS) in prestigious journals and is internationally regarded as leaders in the study of Ankylosing Spondylitis and osteoporosis in particular.

    The role
The successful appointee will carry out detailed analysis of the genomic loci identified by GWAS. This Bioinformatician will use computational approaches that leverage ENCODE, and other omics data to provide a functional hypothesis to each loci and elucidate causative genes and pathways. The successful applicant will be working with a team of clinicians, scientists, research assistants and students in carrying forward this exciting research.

    The person
Applicants should possess a PhD or MSc in Bioinformatics, or in a relevant area of computer science, biostatistics, applied mathematics or biology with at least 12 months experience in bioinformatics (considerably more for SRO). Applicants must possess a track record in bioinformatics and the ability to analyse and manipulate very large data sets. Applicants must also possess good interpersonal and communications skills, excellent analytical skills and attention to detail, and have the capacity to work collaboratively with colleagues.

    Remuneration
This is a full-time, fixed term appointment for 12 months at Academic level A or B, dependent upon qualifications and experience.

For Level A, the remuneration package will be in the range of $74,254 - $79,708 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range of $86,877 - $93,259 p.a.).

For Level B, the remuneration package will be in the range of $83904 - $99635 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range of $98,167 - $116,573 p.a.).

Recent Advances in Sequencing Analysis Tools
    by seqadmin

The sequencing world is rapidly changing due to declining costs, enhanced accuracies, and the advent of newer, cutting-edge instruments. Equally important to these developments are improvements in sequencing analysis, a process that converts vast amounts of raw data into a comprehensible and meaningful form. This complex task requires expertise and the right analysis tools. In this article, we highlight the progress and innovation in sequencing analysis by reviewing several of the...

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...
