  • Bioinformatics Post-doc position in the Chicago area

Are you ready to translate your bioinformatics expertise into actual clinical practice? To deploy it in service of actual patient care? If so, this exciting opportunity could be for you.

We are currently seeking a Bioinformatics Post-Doctoral Fellow for our Center for Bioinformatics & Computational Biology within the Center for Molecular Medicine. This is a full-time position located at Evanston Hospital in Evanston, IL and is benefits eligible. Initial term is for two years - extendable to a third year or into a professional staff position.

We have major initiatives in cancer genomics, pharmacogenomics and medical genetics with the goal of bringing new genomics technologies as close as possible to clinical care. We are looking for candidates with expertise in bioinformatics analysis and a passion to translate dry science into impactful clinical practice.

    RESPONSIBILITIES
The Center for Bioinformatics has three broad roles and you are expected to be involved in all three.
    1. Analyzing NGS (as well as array) data from clinical samples to help clinical management by providing timely annotation service
    2. Supporting research projects of other PIs as well as initiate projects of our own which produce NGS data on research samples
    3. Developing novel analysis algorithms for application to NGS data.

You will interact with biologists, clinicians, informaticians and statisticians. Some of the pipelines you build will be used in a clinical environment and you will be able to see the impact on patient care. This is an opportunity to work in a cutting edge research environment, to develop novel methodologies, to tame this fast evolving technology and to deploy it in clinical care.

    Specifically, you will:
    • Build and maintain pipelines for NGS data analysis
    • Maintain a web-based interface to help clinicians and researchers to interpret variant data.
    • Take part in assay development and validation with collaborators in Molecular Pathology.
    • Regularly review scientific literature; evaluate and recommend applicable updates to our procedures
    • Work collaboratively with PIs to make discoveries in a variety of research genomics data.
    • Teach others to perform technically difficult analyses requiring advanced knowledge of complicated procedures
    • Related duties as required/assigned

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Our ideal candidate will have:
    • Doctoral degree (MD or PhD) in bioinformatics or related field
    • Experience with analyzing NGS and other genomics data
    • Ability to program analysis pipelines
    • Expertise in designing and maintaining web interfaces (django, python, perl) is highly desirable.
    • Excellent communication skills and ability to learn fast in an agile framework are essential.
    • Ability to prepare and author scientific manuscripts
    • Ability to and interest in developing proposals to secure external research funding
    • Capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect experiment or reporting of results and of taking corrective action or notifying appropriate supervisory personnel

Genetic Variation in Immunogenetics and Antibody Diversity
    by seqadmin

The field of immunogenetics explores how genetic variations influence immune responses and susceptibility to disease. In a recent SEQanswers webinar, Oscar Rodriguez, Ph.D., Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Louisville, and Ruben Martínez Barricarte, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Medicine at Vanderbilt University, shared recent advancements in immunogenetics. This article discusses their research on genetic variation in antibody loci, antibody production processes,...

    Choosing Between NGS and qPCR
    by seqadmin

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) are essential techniques for investigating the genome, transcriptome, and epigenome. In many cases, choosing the appropriate technique is straightforward, but in others, it can be more challenging to determine the most effective option. A simple distinction is that smaller, more focused projects are typically better suited for qPCR, while larger, more complex datasets benefit from NGS. However,...
