Hi, I know this is an non-bioinformatics question. I am preparing my manuscripts for a journal. They have some requirements about the figures. I don't quite understand, but I know a lot of people have more experience than I have.
Here are the requirements.
1> Keep lettering consistently sized throughout your final-sized artwork, usually about 2–3 mm (8–12 pt).
2> Variance of type size within an illustration should be minimal, e.g., do not use 8-pt type on an axis and 20-pt type for the axis label.
The first requirement, I understand part of it. They want the fonts on the final-sized figure are 8-12pts. However, I don't know how to calculate this. I have all my figures saved in Adobe Illustrator format (high resolution). The Figure size in Illustrator is about a letter paper size (8.5" by 11"). How would I know the journal will design my final figure's size. They could shirk to half of the letter paper size or a quarter letter paper size? Do you guys know if any basic rules? If they shirk to a quarter paper size (final size), what size of font should be in an original letter-sized figure? How about if they shirk to half letter paper size?
The 2nd requirement, does it mean like this?
If I have a X,Y scatter plot. The gradient on X (1, 2, 3..) should be exactly same size as the X label (Let say my X axis is "Time")
This sounds stupid. Normally, the fonts for the gradients are smaller than labels.
