  • MADSSCi2013 Mid-Atlantic Regional ABRF Meeting June 12 - 14 in Frederick, MD

The Mid-Atlantic Directors and Staff of Scientific Cores (MAD SSCi) is pleased to announce that registration is now open for our first annual meeting, June 12-14, 2013. The cost for the two day event is $105, and includes admission to all meeting sessions, attendance at optional satellite workshops, and admittance to the opening social and Thursday's poster session. Additionally, registration covers breakfast and lunch on Thursday and Friday, and refreshments at the opening social and the poster session.

This meeting is designed to give directors and staff of core facilities or science departments with shared equipment the opportunity to network and learn from each other and from regional experts, gaining ideas and possible solutions for problems that challenge all of us.

Topics will include: Imaging, Epigenomics, Microarrays, NextGen Sequencing, Flow Cytometry, Metabolomics, Quality Control, Core Management, LIMS, IT Infrastructure, and a view from the top, featuring a discussion of the utility and challenges of core facilities by University administration.

Pre-conference satellite workshops will be available at no additional charge for some practical, vendor-specific training.

Participants are encouraged to submit abstracts to present during the poster session on Thursday, June 13th. This offers an excellent opportunity to network with fellow core facility staff.

The meeting will be hosted by the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research at their new Advanced Technology Research Facility (ATRF) in Frederick, MD. Tours of the ATRF’s core facilities will be offered. Tours will highlight the Imaging, Nanotechnology, Genomics, Proteomics and Biopharmaceutical Development Program laboratories.

Please plan now to join us for this exciting event. The daily agenda, travel and registration information may be found at http://madssci.my.abrf.org.

Registration is open to all academic and government Core Facility directors and staff. MAD SSCi is a chapter of the Association of Biomolecular Resource Facilities (ABRF). Not a member of ABRF? Join today and see the benefits networking with other Core facilities can provide! (Membership is not required for registration.)

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
