REDCap for a genomics facility

Has anyone implemented REDCap as a way to track samples as they go through the process(es) in a core? It looks like it can track samples to a point but I'm not sure I can add the information I need and it may be too clunky in terms of layout when entering multiple samples. Would REDCap be able to supplement a LIMS systerm? Of the installations of REDCap they say that there are quite a few being used for research but most installations are being used clinically. Since we are a genomics research core we are interested to hear from the research community if and how people are using REDCap. We do not intend this to be a replacement for LIMS long term but perhaps a better more track-able system than our current excel sheet.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
