  • Hello,

    Hello There!
I am starting an evaluation of free softwares in order to assembly solexa reads. I have money to buy a new good computer. I've noticed that most of the software for assembling require lot of memory. I need some advice about the computer requirements to run these programs.
    Thanks
    Jose

    Hello Jose!
I am new and also searching some good free softwares for assembly of genomes from solexa reads. Yes, these softwares requires lot of memory. I think atleast Mac's 3 GHz processor, 12 GB RAM, 300+ Hard disk will work for you. What do u say on it?

      Thanks for your comments,
Yeah I already did some simulations with some programs (Velvet and ssake) in my old Mac Pro, 8 GB memory. It is fine with 2 million of reads (~50 bp length), but more than that the computer is out of memory. 12 GB RAM sounds a decent amount to start so.

Great I am looking for mapping/reference based assembly software for bacterial genome. Have you any idea which one is better to use, coz Velvet and SSake does de novo assembly. Any idea ???

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
          by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...

          Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
          by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
