  • post-doc NGS epigenetic research in neuroscience

The Campagne laboratory is located at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, in the space of the Institute for Computational Biomedicine (http://icb.med.cornell.edu/). Our laboratory is actively developing scalable computational approaches that facilitate the analysis of next-generation sequencing assays, such as used to profile DNA methylation (see http://goby.campagnelab.org). We currently have an opportunity for a post-doctoral fellow to join the laboratory and work on profiling of DNA methylation in specific populations of neurons in the hippocampus (collaboration with Dr. Miklos Toth’s laboratory, at Weill Cornell Medical College).

Computational research will entail developing novel algorithms and tools to efficiently identify regions of the genome where DNA methylation correlates with neuronal cell types, and/or anxiety behavior in mice. The project will also consist in functionally characterizing the set of genomic regions found differentially methylated (DMRs), such as analyzing sets of genes that overlap with the DMRs identified in the profiling experiments. Familiarity with pathway analysis and systems biology approaches is a plus. The successful applicant will work closely at the interface of the Campagne and Toth laboratories, will apply existing approaches or develop new ones, as required by the scientific goals of the project, and will use computational methods to yield novel biological insights in the role of DNA methylation in establishing and maintaining behavior. Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate a strong background in statistics, computer science and/or systems biology.

Highly motivated, research-oriented individuals are encouraged to apply. The successful applicant will be responsible for developing implementations of new algorithms in open source software, develop focused summaries of data analysis, prepare technical descriptions of his/her work for inclusion in manuscripts, presentations at meetings and grant proposals. The fellow will be expected to keep a comprehensive laboratory notebook documenting data analyses and algorithm development steps. He/she will be able to demonstrate strong communication skills, both verbal and written as well as excellent organization skills to manage concurrent projects. This position is a good opportunity to join a multi-disciplinary team focused on studying how epigenetic changes in neurons, induced by environmental challenges, modulate or control phenotype and behavior.

    Education and Experience:
A Ph.D. degree in the fields of bioinformatics, statistics, or computer science are required. PhD in Biology will also be considered when the candidate can demonstrate a solid computational experience. Candidates with a strong background in neuroscience are especially encouraged to apply.

Earliest Start date: September 1st, 2011
Please address resume, cover letter and the name of three references to Dr Fabien Campagne.
