Bioinformatician position - Health Protection Agency - NGS

A vacancy has arisen for a Healthcare Scientist/Bioinformatician to work within the Laboratory of Gastrointestinal Pathogens (LGP) at Colindale, HPA - Laboratory of Gastrointestinal Pathogens (LGP). The Laboratory of Gastrointestinal Pathogens (LGP) provides reference services for a wide range of gastrointestinal, and food and water-borne pathogens. The Gastrointestinal Reference Unit (GIRU) receives isolates of E. coli from across the nation for identification and typing. The post holder will work within GIRU as part of an extended research group within microbiology at Colindale.

The successful applicant will be a highly motivated individual seeking to gain experience of translational research with next generation sequence data. The post holder will be required to work as part of a team to:
    • Compile in appropriate databases the complex data arising from a grant-funded project to characterize E. coli O157:H7 from humans and cattle
    • Assemble bioinformatics tools and pipelines suitable for analysis and comparison of the genome and plasmid sequences generated in the project
    • Undertake novel analyses on data arising from the research and development grant

16S/ITS Profiling vs. Shotgun Metagenomics: What Changes in Your Workflow?
    by SEQadmin2

NGS has revolutionized clinical microbiology by offering new ways to identify and surveil pathogens without prior knowledge of the target. One popular approach is 16S rRNA and ITS amplicon sequencing, which targets specific microbial markers. But studies are increasingly incorporating shotgun metagenomics, a technique that sequences all DNA from a sample without targeting specific microbial markers. This approach allows more detailed taxonomic classification, detection...

Multiomic Liquid Biopsy: What DNA/RNA Panels Reveal That DNA Alone Can’t
    by SEQadmin2

Tumors contain complex mixtures of cell populations that evolve in response to treatment and host-specific factors. Tissue biopsies provide only static snapshots of a tumor’s state. But what if we could follow that evolution over time using a minimally invasive technique?

Liquid biopsies can detect tumor-derived material circulating in the bloodstream, providing a way to study treatment response, detect emerging resistance, and discover new biomarkers. Circulating
