    IRC61386-Data Intensive Computing for Next Generation Sequencing.

    Location: STFC Daresbury Laboratory, Cheshire, UK

    Full-time, fixed term for 3 years.

    Salary: Up to £37,534 but for exceptional candidates with a track record of delivering computational biology projects and attracting funding, the position may be available at up to £47,521.

    We are looking for an energetic and innovative individual to contribute to the development of a portfolio of projects for data intensive biology, within the Hartree Centre at the STFC Daresbury Laboratory. Recently established as a major computational sciences institute, the Hartree Centre brings together academic, government and industry communities to provide a step change in modelling capabilities for strategic themes including energy, life sciences, the environment, and materials. The Centre will concentrate on a small number of grand challenge problems at any given time, via consortia of science and technology experts. The Centre is equipped with high performance computating resources to provide a research and development capability, including provision for high memory applications and large datasets.

    You will be responsible for the development and running of Hartree Centre projects for data intensive applications in the life sciences. These projects are expected to be in the general area of next generation sequencing, but may involve different techniques (genome assembly, RNAseq, metagenomics, etc) applied to scientific domains in biology, medicine, crop science and environment. A number of early access prototype projects are underway and you will assist with running these projects, along with proposing and initiating new projects. Where appropriate, you will optimise existing codes or write new software, and collaborate on scientific challenges.

    You will have a good understanding of genomics and sequencing, particularly from the point of view of data analysis and statistics. You will need to collaborate closely with external scientists, and will have a good appreciation of the computational requirements of relevant codes and datasets. The Hartree Centre has staff with expertise in running codes on high performance computing machines, and you will work closely with them as well as with hardware and software vendors.
