A Bioinformatics Assistant post is available immediately within the Molecular Genetics Laboratory at the Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated bioinformatics assistant with an interest in human genetics, to contribute to the provision of Molecular Genetic services by providing support in bioinformatics, data analysis and data management. The post-holder will develop and implement efficient analysis pipelines for exome and targeted next generation sequence data generated by an Illumina HiSeq2000. The role will involve working closely with scientific staff to evaluate bioinformatic tools to assist in the interpretation of DNA variants and the provision of bioinformatics training for staff within the department.
The laboratory is friendly and sociable, with 22 members of staff (10 clinical scientists, 6 genetic technologists, 3 associate genetic technologists, 2 healthcare science assistants and 1 administrator) in addition to a lively research team who have a world-class reputation in the genetics of diabetes (winners of the Queen’s Anniversary Prize in 2006). The successful candidate will have a BSc (Hons) degree (or equivalent qualification) in bioinformatics or genetics, and knowledge of next generation sequencing analysis. Knowledge of programming languages (Java, PERL or R) and SQL database design is required in addition to experience of working in UNIX/LINUX.
This is a fixed term contract until 10th April 2014.

Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Salary: £25,528 to £34,189 per annum / pro rata (band 6)
