The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto is looking for talented and motivated Bioinformatics Scientists to work on pediatric cancer genomics, and clinical genomics. The successful candidates will join a new research team employing modern sequence-based techniques including whole genome and transcriptome sequencing to better diagnose and treat childhood cancer. The group works closely with The Centre for Applied Genomics, the Division of Molecular Genetics, and the Department of Hematology/Oncology and maintains close ties with the Cancer Genome Project at the Sanger Institute.
The lab is working on a number of projects, whose aims include:
• Understanding the transcriptional consequences of somatic mutation in cancer;
• Understanding the timing and processes that give rise to mutations in pediatric cancers;
• Developing novel informatics methods for the analysis of thousands of sequenced cancer specimens with an emphasis on integrative analyses;
• Working with the Hospital for Sick Children’s diagnostic lab to incorporate next-generation sequencing into routine clinical practice.
Here’s What You’ll Get To Do
The Bioinformatics Scientist Fellow will develop custom software as well as utilize commercial and open source software to help understand experimental genomic data and to support ongoing research activities. The Candidates will keep abreast of new and emerging technologies, and suggest new ways of analyzing and integrating very large data sets.
The Bioinformatics Scientist will enjoy working on challenging problems, and will benefit from an intellectually stimulating and very well-resourced environment in the Hospital for Sick Children’s new Research Tower, located in downtown Toronto.
Here’s What You’ll Need
• A minimum of a Masters degree in a relevant field such as bioinformatics, cancer biology, mathematics or computer science.
• An advanced understanding of computer science and bioinformatics.
• Experience with genome-wide data is absolutely necessary
• Knowledge of next-generation sequencing data analysis is an asset.
• Demonstrated programming abilities (C, Perl, Python etc.), be familiar with Unix, and high-performance computing.
• Familiarity with statistical genomics methods and software are also an asset.
• Excellent communication skills and thrive in a collaborative team.
