  • JHU Computer Science: Postdoc in analysis of big sequencing data

Applications are invited for an open Postdoctoral Fellow position. The postdoc will work with myself (Langmead) and colleagues at Johns Hopkins University, including in our schools of Public Health and Medicine, on the application of parallel programming and big data methods to the analysis of very large collections of DNA and RNA sequencing data. The applicant need not have deep knowledge of biological fields or statistics, though both will be involved to some degree in the postdoc's day-to-day work. Prof. Langmead's group has an excellent track record of publishing high-impact articles and releasing software tools that are widely used in the genome community, including highly efficient and scalable tools. Examples include:

    Ideal applicants will have:
    • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or related field
    • Excellent programming skills, especially in Python and C/C++
    • Demonstrable skills working with large datasets; e.g. parallel programming, especially using Hadoop and Elastic MapReduce, streaming algorithms, sketches, compression, indexing
    • Published papers and excellent communication skills

To apply, please email langmea (at) cs.jhu.edu a letter of interest, a current CV, and the names of two references. Please include "Postdoc applicant" in the email subject line.

Recent Advances in Sequencing Analysis Tools
    by seqadmin

The sequencing world is rapidly changing due to declining costs, enhanced accuracies, and the advent of newer, cutting-edge instruments. Equally important to these developments are improvements in sequencing analysis, a process that converts vast amounts of raw data into a comprehensible and meaningful form. This complex task requires expertise and the right analysis tools. In this article, we highlight the progress and innovation in sequencing analysis by reviewing several of the...

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...
