Institute of Cell and Molecular Science

    Non-Clinical Senior Lecturer in Bioinformatics
    (REF: 08276/HR)

Applications are invited for the post of Non-Clinical Senior Lecturer in Bioinformatics to join the Institute of Cell and Molecular Science (ICMS, www.icms.qmul.ac.uk) at Barts and The London School of Medicine & Dentistry.

Genomics research in ICMS includes multifactorial disease (genome wide association scans in celiac disease and diabetes), monogenic skin disease, viral and bacterial genetics and studies of the epigenome. As well as undertaking high level research into bioinformatics, complementary to the overall research strategy of the Institute and School, the successful candidate will also provide bioinformatics support to ICMS staff performing projects using next generation sequence data (currently Roche 454GSFlex and Illumina Genome Analyser II). The post holder will also be expected to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activity, as determined by the Institute’s Teaching Lead.

As well as a relevant PhD and a proven track record of bioinformatics research, the successful candidate will have experience in algorithm design and/or mathematics; maintaining unix/linux based servers and programming for bioinformatics applications. He/she will be based within the Blizard Building, a new award-winning building at Whitechapel. This exciting environment contains world class facilities for biomedical research based on an innovative open plan design and includes core facilities for Imaging, Flow Cytometry, Genomics and Transgenic research.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Asylum and Immigration Act 1999.

Informal enquiries can be made to Professor Andrew Silver (Tel: 020 7882 2590; Email: [email protected]), or Professor Graham Hitman (Tel: 020 7882 2356; Email: [email protected]). This is a full-time indefinite appointment, with a salary at the appropriate point for experience on the Academic scale (£46,833-£52,365 per annum inclusive of London Allowance).

For an application form and further information, please visit the Human Resources website on http://www.hr.qmul.ac.uk/vacancies, or request details (quoting the above reference number) via email [email protected].

The deadline for return of completed applications is 12 noon (BST) on 18 August 2008. Applications (quoting the above reference number) should be returned via email to [email protected] or alternatively by post to: Whitechapel Recruitment, Barts and The London School of Medicine & Dentistry, c/o SMD Management Offices, The Lodge House, Charterhouse Square, London EC1M 6BQ. Please note: completed applications must not be sent directly to ICMS, or to Professors Silver or Hitman.

Where applicants are short listed for interview, references will normally be taken up prior to interview. Applicants who do not wish any referees to be so contacted should make this explicitly clear on their application. We are unfortunately unable to reply to those applicants who have not been short listed and invited for interview. However, we would like to thank all candidates for their applications and for their interest in working for the School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
