Postdoctoral Scientist/Research Technician in genome assembly

An opportunity exists for a bioinformatics Research Officer (post-doc) or Research Technician to join the Papenfuss laboratory in the Bioinformatics division at The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI).

The Papenfuss laboratory works on a variety of exciting bioinformatics projects using next generation sequencing and other genomics technologies to study diseases including cancer and malaria. We collaborate closely with clinicians and biologists generating data and these collaborations motivate development of new bioinformatics methods.

The role will have a strong focus on genome and transcriptome de novo assembly projects and subsequent analyses. A key project the lab is involved in is the Scabies Mite Genome project. Other projects will be related to malaria and some cancer projects.

Applicants should have a Bachelors Degree with honours or masters ideally in a quantitative discipline such as mathematics/statistics, computer science, physics, or bioinformatics, a strong interest in biology and a passion for science.

Applicants with PhDs in a relevant discipline are welcome to apply. Qualifications or experience in bioinformatics and previous experience in de novo assembly and genome projects would be a major advantage. The positions require strong programming skills and expertise in python and R is highly desirable. A variety of high performance computing platforms will be used. Familiarity with unix is essential. Applicants should have excellent writing skills and are expected to present research results orally.
The positions will be for 1 year in the first instance. Salary is dependent upon qualifications and experience. Up to 17% superannuation and attractive salary packaging options are available.

A position description is available. General Enquiries should be directed to Associate Professor Tony Papenfuss ([email protected]).

Written applications including cover letter, CV and the names of 3 professional referees should be emailed in PDF format quoting WEHI/MKDP2 to [email protected].

    Closing date: 11/10/2013

16S/ITS Profiling vs. Shotgun Metagenomics: What Changes in Your Workflow?
    by SEQadmin2

NGS has revolutionized clinical microbiology by offering new ways to identify and surveil pathogens without prior knowledge of the target. One popular approach is 16S rRNA and ITS amplicon sequencing, which targets specific microbial markers. But studies are increasingly incorporating shotgun metagenomics, a technique that sequences all DNA from a sample without targeting specific microbial markers. This approach allows more detailed taxonomic classification, detection...

Multiomic Liquid Biopsy: What DNA/RNA Panels Reveal That DNA Alone Can’t
    by SEQadmin2

Tumors contain complex mixtures of cell populations that evolve in response to treatment and host-specific factors. Tissue biopsies provide only static snapshots of a tumor’s state. But what if we could follow that evolution over time using a minimally invasive technique?

Liquid biopsies can detect tumor-derived material circulating in the bloodstream, providing a way to study treatment response, detect emerging resistance, and discover new biomarkers. Circulating
