Systems administrator and programmer – Genosuber - Cork Oak Genome Sequencing Project
CEBAL (Centro de Biotecnologia Agrícola e Agro-Alimentar do Alentejo) has available a position for a systems administrator/programmer, in the ambit of Genosuber - Cork Oak Genome Sequencing Project (www.genosuber.com), ref ALENT-07-0224-FEDER-001754 funded by InAlentejo. The project involves several Portuguese research institutions and industry partners. The project goals are to sequence and annotate the cork oak genome, using data generated with several high-throughput sequencing technologies.

Description of the position
For this position we are looking for a candidate with experience in systems administration and programming. The successful candidate will be involved in the setup, installation and configuration of the system hardware, software and related infrastructure. Additionally, system administration, maintenance and backup will also be part of the job responsibilities. Programming in Perl and/or Python will be required for system related issues, software installation and processing/analysis of high-throughput sequence datasets. The ability to work closely with the project’s senior scientists and biologists is essential.
Responsibilities
• Install, configure and maintain the server and associated hardware/software in accordance with the requirements from the project
• Research, identify and implement innovative approaches for the most efficient utilization of the system
• Perform regular security inspections for intrusions and other external threats
• Conduct system monitoring, data backups, file archival and purge
• Manage the accounts of all users of the system, including users with remote access
• Use programming skills to maximize efficiency of system utilization and problem solving
• Develop algorithms and computational tools for processing and analysis of high-throughput sequence data
• Provide end-user support and devise solutions for problems experienced by users
• Prepare and submit sequence datasets to public available databases
Qualifications
• University degree in computer science or related field
• At least 1 year experience of systems administration, including working knowledge of UNIX/LINUX operating systems
• Strong programming skills in Perl and/or Python
• Excellent skills and demonstrated experience in UNIX/LINUX programming
• Experience in using relational databases
• Strong problem solving skills
• Understanding of biology and/or genetics is desirable, but not essential
• Familiarity with high-throughput sequence data is desirable, but not essential
• Ability to provide information in a clear and concise way
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact with project members in a team-oriented effort
Work place
The position will be based at CEBAL, in Beja, Portugal. The scientific coordination will be provided by Drs. Marcos Ramos (INIAV) and Sónia Gonçalves (CEBAL).
Duration
The position will be available for 2 years, with the possibility of extension for an additional 6 months, depending on funding availability.
Salary
The salary will consist of net 745 euro per month. The salary can be raised to net 980 euro per month, for candidates with a Masters degree. These values are defined by FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia).

• Previous experience in bioinformatics (20%)
