  • Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow in Microbial Bioinformatics vacancy

Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow in Microbial Bioinformatics
Clinical and Experimental Sciences, University of Southampton
    Location: Southampton General Hospital
    Salary: £27,854 to £44,607
Full Time, Fixed Term - 2 years
Closing Date: Wednesday 18 December 2013
    Reference: 323913FC

The Infectious Disease and Epidemiology Research group in the Academic Unit of Clinical and Experimental Sciences wish to appoint a Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow in Microbial Bioinformatics. The research group is based within the Faculty of Medicine at Southampton General Hospital.

Our group is undertaking a number of projects involving the whole genome sequencing of respiratory pathogens. These include studies looking at the effect of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines on carriage in young children and the analysis of bacterial isolates from a large epidemiological study of COPD patients. This post provides an exciting opportunity for someone with an interest in respiratory disease, vaccine evaluation and vaccine development to be part of an on-going programme of work using next generation sequencing protocols.

Applications are invited from those with relevant experience of planning, developing and carrying out analyses of microbial genome sequences (including data handling, annotation and comparative genomic analyses). Applicants should possess a PhD in a relevant area. Experience of working in the Unix environment (programming or scripting) and the ability to contribute to improved experimental design and the development of experimental and analytical protocols is essential. The postholder should also possess the ability to supervise the work of junior research staff. Previous experience of working in an academic/clinical microbiology setting would be advantageous. Applicants must be available to work with some flexibility.

This post is required to start as soon as possible and is a fixed term contract of 2 years, with the possibility of extension (subject to funding).

Prospective applicants are encouraged to contact Dr Stuart Clarke ([email protected]) or Dr Topher Woelk ([email protected]) for more information.
