  • Senior Bioinformatician Position, Cambridge

    University of Cambridge

    Senior Bioinformatician
    Institute of Metabolic Science – Metabolic Research Laboratories

    Vacancy Ref. RG02915 Salary: £33,562 to £45,053

    We are looking for a senior bioinformatician with a strong interest in next-generation sequencing (NGS) data analyses. The successful applicant will be responsible for designing and maintaining several NGS related analytical and data storage pipelines, in close collaboration with the University of Cambridge high-performance computing (HPC) facility. The role holder will also be working along side with clinicians and biologists at the Institute of Metabolic Science, based at the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, to design and interpret bespoke 'genomics and transcriptomics’ studies for metabolic research.

    Key Responsibilities:
    - Design, deploy and maintain standard (and emerging) NGS bioinformatics pipelines such as whole-exome sequencing, target capture and RNAseq;
    - Design, deploy and maintain storage solutions for NGS data;
    - Liaise with HPCF and provide system administration for access to HPC services
    - Deployment and maintenance of bioinformatics frameworks for biologists (e.g. Galaxy);
    - Work with biologists to design genomics and transcriptomics studies and perform associated data analyses.

    Required Skills:
    - PhD in Bioinformatics, Computer Science or other numerical backgrounds with connections to life science;
    - Substantial experience in bioinformatics analyses, especially in genomics and transcriptomics;
    - Ability to engage and communicate with people from multiple clinical and biological disciplines;
    - Experience in working with HPCs, including workload managements and job scheduling systems (e.g. SLURM or Torque);
    - Familiar with R/Bioconductor, and popular NGS software tools such as BWA, Tophat/Bowtie, Picard, Samtools, Plink/SEQ, GATK and Cufflinks, et cetera;
    - The role holder must be proficient in Linux shell script, and either python or perl scripts, experience in web development (i.e. HTML/CSS/Javascript) is also an advantage.

    Desirable skills
    - Experience in programmatic web services (e.g. REST API);
    - Proficient in one of common programming languages such as Java or C/C++;
    - Experience in Unix/Linux system administration.

    Applications, including CV and covering letter should be submitted on-line via Apply on advertisement position Ref. RG02915 on http://www.jobs.cam.ac.uk/

    Recent Advances in Sequencing Analysis Tools
    by seqadmin

    The sequencing world is rapidly changing due to declining costs, enhanced accuracies, and the advent of newer, cutting-edge instruments. Equally important to these developments are improvements in sequencing analysis, a process that converts vast amounts of raw data into a comprehensible and meaningful form. This complex task requires expertise and the right analysis tools. In this article, we highlight the progress and innovation in sequencing analysis by reviewing several of the...

    Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

    The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...
