Postdoctoral Researcher (Bioinformatics) - TGAC, Norwich, UK

Development of computational strategies for identification and characterisation of viruses in metagenomic samples

We are looking for an enthusiastic postdoctoral scientist to work on a new BBSRC funded project which seeks to develop approaches for the assembly and analysis of next generation sequence data from viral metagenomic communities. The post holder will be a proficient programmer (with C, C++ or Java experience) who is excited by the challenge of developing algorithms for metagenomic data. Previous experience with genomics, metagenomics or sequence analysis would be very beneficial.

It is anticipated that the work will be based around the MetaCortex assembly tool developed by TGAC, which has already been applied to the analysis of viral communities (Virology 441(2):95-106).

The project involves collaboration with researchers at the MRC - University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research, who will be helping to provide samples tailored to the specific needs of the work.

The Genome Analysis Centre is a research institute supported by the BBSRC to ensure that biological science in the UK has access to a skill base in genomics technologies and bioinformatics to deliver programmes leading to improved food security, advances in industrial biotechnology and improved human health and wellbeing.

16S/ITS Profiling vs. Shotgun Metagenomics: What Changes in Your Workflow?
    by SEQadmin2

NGS has revolutionized clinical microbiology by offering new ways to identify and surveil pathogens without prior knowledge of the target. One popular approach is 16S rRNA and ITS amplicon sequencing, which targets specific microbial markers. But studies are increasingly incorporating shotgun metagenomics, a technique that sequences all DNA from a sample without targeting specific microbial markers. This approach allows more detailed taxonomic classification, detection...

Multiomic Liquid Biopsy: What DNA/RNA Panels Reveal That DNA Alone Can’t
    by SEQadmin2

Tumors contain complex mixtures of cell populations that evolve in response to treatment and host-specific factors. Tissue biopsies provide only static snapshots of a tumor’s state. But what if we could follow that evolution over time using a minimally invasive technique?

Liquid biopsies can detect tumor-derived material circulating in the bloodstream, providing a way to study treatment response, detect emerging resistance, and discover new biomarkers. Circulating
