  • Assistant professor or post-doc in bioinformatics & next-generation sequencing

VCU’s Center for Biomarker Research and Personalized Medicine (www.pharmacy.vcu.edu/biomarker) is seeking a non-tenured, full time faculty Research Assistant Professor or post-doc with expertise in bioinformatics and the analysis of next-generation sequencing data. The Center’s research aims at identifying and using biomarkers to improve disease understanding and tailor medication use in individual patients. Most applications involve psychiatric diseases and substance use disorders and high-dimensional investigations are considered powerful tools to achieve these goals. For example, to find methylation markers for schizophrenia, in one project we perform whole genome sequencing of 1,575 samples with targeted follow up of the most promising findings in 1,600 independent samples.

Candidates should have obtained a PhD degree in computational biology, bioinformatics, computer science, or a related discipline. S/he will employ computational approaches to analyze genome-wide biological datasets that for an important part are generated (in-house) using next-generation sequencing of genomes, methylomes, and transcriptomes. Experience with alignment software, Linux/Unix, automation of data analysis pipelines, and scripting languages such as R, PERL, and Python is desirable.

Projects are highly multidisciplinary and interactive involving other center members plus external collaborators in the US and abroad. The Center is well funded and equipped, occupying a suite of state-of-the-art laboratories on the university’s MCV Campus. The position is initially for two years and offers ample opportunities for publishing articles and career development.

All interested applicants should email a current resume and three (3) names and contact information of references to: Ms. Andrea M. Poyotte, [email protected]

Recent Advances in Sequencing Analysis Tools
    by seqadmin

The sequencing world is rapidly changing due to declining costs, enhanced accuracies, and the advent of newer, cutting-edge instruments. Equally important to these developments are improvements in sequencing analysis, a process that converts vast amounts of raw data into a comprehensible and meaningful form. This complex task requires expertise and the right analysis tools. In this article, we highlight the progress and innovation in sequencing analysis by reviewing several of the...

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...
