  • Senior Lecturer in Bioinformatics

MEDICAL RESEARCH COUNCIL CENTRE FOR MEDICAL MYCOLOGY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN

SCHOOL OF MEDICINE, MEDICAL SCIENCES AND NUTRITION
    INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES

    SENIOR LECTURER IN BIOINFORMATICS

    IMS040AX

The Medical Research Council (MRC) has awarded MRC Centre status for Medical Mycology to the University’s Aberdeen Fungal Group (AFG). This new MRC Centre for Medical Mycology (MRC CMM) at the University of Aberdeen will spearhead innovative research and training to generate knowledge that will improve the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of fungal diseases. The MRC CMM represents a joint £6.5m investment by both the MRC and the University of Aberdeen.

We seek an outstanding Senior Lecturer in Bioinformatics with a clear interest in molecular mycology and/or fungal pathogenesis. We are particularly interested in colleagues with a recognised track record in Bioinformatics in microbiology and/or immunology, who have demonstrated their ability to drive an independent research programme. This post will be initially supported with one 3-year Early Career Fellowship and a generous sequencing budget for novel interdisciplinary projects that promote strategic interactions with other members of the MRC CMM.

The recruited Senior Lecturer will be expected to integrate their own independent research programme within the Centre, and to establish productive collaborations with other MRC CMM Investigators (www.abdn.ac.uk/cmm). The appointee will be physically embedded within the MRC CMM, to maximise interactions within the group, but will also be associated with the Centre for Genome-Enabled Biology and Medicine (CGEBM at Aberdeen; https://www.abdn.ac.uk/genomics/), which has infrastructure and expertise in de novo sequencing, epigenomics, transcriptomics, metagenomics, SNP discovery, as well as whole genome and targeted re-sequencing of microbes and animals from tissues, single cells and ancient DNA samples. The post holder will help facilitate the research objectives of the MRC CMM by providing essential new capacity that will enable the utilisation of next generation sequencing and other emerging technologies.

Salary will be at the appropriate point on Grade 8 (£50,618 – 56,950 per annum), with placement according to qualifications and experience.

Informal enquiries are welcome and should be made to Professor Gordon Brown, Director, MRC Centre for Medical Mycology (Tel: 01224 437 355 or e-mail: [email protected]).

Should you require a visa to undertake paid employment in the UK you will be required to fulfil the minimum point’s criteria to be granted a Certificate of Sponsorship and Tier 2 visa. As appropriate, at the time an offer of appointment is made you will be asked to demonstrate that you fulfil the criteria in respect of financial maintenance and competency in English. Please do not hesitate to contact Natalie Reid, HR Adviser, ([email protected]) for further information on this.
