  • Research Associate in Data Science (Genomics) (Fixed Term) - University of Cambridge

    We are currently seeking applicants for a postdoctoral research position in data science at the recently formed Cambridge Baker Systems Genomics Initiative (CBSGI) in the Department of Public Health and Primary Care (DPHPC). The post would suit ambitious researchers, who are interested in applying their analytical skills in the fields of genetics/genomics, network biology and machine learning in biomedicine.

    The Cambridge Baker Systems Genomics Initiative is an international partnership between the DPHPC and the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute (Melbourne, Australia). CBSGI conducts world-leading interdisciplinary research with a major focus on the development of statistical and machine learning approaches as well as the application of bespoke approaches to multi-omics data from studies of >100,000 participants, with the goal of improving the prediction and prevention of cardiometabolic, respiratory and related diseases. The Director of CBSGI is Associate Professor Michael Inouye, a Principal Researcher in Systems Genomics at the University of Cambridge and the position's supervisor.     The successful candidate will be involved in statistical analyses of multi-omic data, including genomic, proteomic, metabolomic, transcriptomic, and metagenomics data, as well as electronic health records. The aims of this research are (i) to identify causal variants and disease pathways which may inform drug target prioritisation, (ii) build polygenic models of diseases which maximise prediction in conjunction with known and novel risk factors, and (iii) develop and apply machine learning approaches which identify and characterise disease subtypes and their underlying causal risk factors. Beyond CBSGI, the selected candidate will collaborate closely with an interdisciplinary team of scientists, clinicians, bioinformaticians and statisticians at the DPHPC.

    The post-holders will also be expected to evaluate and develop the statistical and machine learning methods necessary to answer questions of interest, such as those listed above and advise on appropriate statistical practices. The work of each post-holder is expected to lead to first author high-impact publications.

    The post-holder will be based at the Department of Public Health and Primary Care, University of Cambridge, Strangeways Research Laboratory, Worts Causeway, Cambridge, CB1 8RN. Depending on research priorities, there may be international travel to the CBSGI partner institution, the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute in Melbourne, Australia.

    Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 1 August 2020 in the first instance.
