    Essential Functions


    POSITION SUMMARY:

    A Research Assistant position is available in Dr. Jin Zhang's group to work on Genomics data analysis and Bioinformatics programming. The candidate will play a critical role in implementing novel bioinformatics algorithms and pipelines and carrying out data analyses using genomic and clinical data.

    The position offers an excellent opportunity to conduct research in a supportive and stimulating environment, closely collaborating with computer scientists, biologists, and clinicians within the Department and other Institutes across the campus, including the McDonnell Genome Institute and the Institute for Informatics.

    PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Prepares bioinformatic analysis pipeline of whole transcriptome sequencing (RNA-seq) to identify and quantitate gene expression and other RNA alterations, including gene fusion.
    Conducts statistical analyses of genomic data and clinical features.
    Coordinates research projects to effectively visualize data to convey findings to scientists, clinicians, and community members.
    Helps maintain, support, and document tools, code, and data sets.


    Required Qualifications


    Equivalent of bachelor’s degree with 2-3 years of experience in laboratory operations.



    Preferred Qualifications


    Bachelor/Master’s degree in bioinformatics, computer science or related field.
    Experience or course work completed in object-oriented algorithm design and implementation with C++, Python, or Java.
    Experience or course work completed in a statistical programming language, such as R.
    Highly motivated with excellent oral and written communication skills.
    Understanding of next-generation sequencing technologies.
    Understanding of statistical techniques for differential expression, clustering, and gene set enrichment analysis.
    Experience with Git, Docker, and Cloud computing.


    Salary Range


    The hiring range for this position is $15.46 - $20.88 per hour.

    Department Summary


    The Cancer Biology Division within the Department of Radiation Oncology consists of a core group of clinical, physics and computational science investigators who use both archived and prospectively collected tumor samples to ask fundamental questions about radiotherapy efficacy and cancer biology. The Bioinformatics Program works closely with clinicians to identify biomarkers that can be used to stratify patients and to identify patients for targeted therapies.
