  • Bioinformatics PhD position in Next Generation Sequencing analysis

A Bioinformatics PhD position is available for 3 years in the group of Burkhard Tümmler at Hannover Medical School in Hannover, Germany starting in October 2019 (or later). Salary will be according to the domestic TV-L tarif (0.65 E13).

The applicant will be working in the modern Pediatric Research Center. Modern cluster computational infrastructure, MGI-seq, NextSeq, Miseq, Pacbio and MinION sequencers are established at present.

Key aspect of the applicant's work will be the evaluation and analysis of next-generation sequencing data in various research projects conducted on site, including projects from the German Lung Centre and the Lower Saxony Big Data OMICS initiative as well the Cluster of Excellence RESIST. The main project will revolve around the in-depth analysis of data from multiple sequencing platforms from large cohorts to gain insights into population ecology and evolution of bacteria in the airway of patients and healthy controls. Other projects will range from restructuring and analysis of existing metagenomic data to the implementation of time-critical analysis pipelines for Oxford Nanopore data. The third year of the PhD will include application of machine learning techniques learned from experts at the Leibniz University.

We offer a modern work environment in a multidisciplinary team, composed of bioinformaticians, molecular biologists, biochemists, and medical scientists.

Hannover Medical School is an established institution with proven ground-breaking research and several Excellence Clusters and is a leader in acquiring grant funding. Hannover, the state capital of Lower Saxony, has a population of 550,000 and lies within easy reach of excellent summer and winter recreational areas in the Harz mountains, Steinhuder Meer and the North and Baltic seas. The city hosts three University campuses and offers a good standard of living.

    Responsibilities:
    • NGS data analysis
    • Ability to train others in bioinformatics

    Required skills:
    • Knowledge of metagenomics (not 16S) and microbial genetics
    • Excellent computer skills
    • Experience with Linux or similar OS
    • Very good spoken and written English
    • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team

    Desired skills:
