How health status and abundance of bacteria are related through PCA?

    Hi,

I have a question about how health status and abundance of bacteria are correlated using PCA in this paper (A human gut microbial gene catalogue established by metagenomic sequencing):

I don't really understand how PCA was done, the authors doesn't seem to have too much detail on it. Can someone tell me more about how PCA was done in this diagram?

    Thanks for your help!

    What's the question?

Note to those who did not click on the image: it shows that traditional Principle components analysis 2D plot show differing gut bacteria composition for Crohns, UC, and "healthy" patients.

A word of caution: correlation is not always causation. Crohn's patients do have different gut flora (bateria, arachaea (sp?), etc.). The patient may have some underlying different immune systems which results in a different gut flora ... or a different gut flora perhaps spearheaded by the introduction of an invasive species results in sickness.

My question is that I don't really know how the authors used health status and abundance of species to do this PCA.

16S/ITS Profiling vs. Shotgun Metagenomics: What Changes in Your Workflow?
        by SEQadmin2

NGS has revolutionized clinical microbiology by offering new ways to identify and surveil pathogens without prior knowledge of the target. One popular approach is 16S rRNA and ITS amplicon sequencing, which targets specific microbial markers. But studies are increasingly incorporating shotgun metagenomics, a technique that sequences all DNA from a sample without targeting specific microbial markers. This approach allows more detailed taxonomic classification, detection...

Multiomic Liquid Biopsy: What DNA/RNA Panels Reveal That DNA Alone Can’t
        by SEQadmin2

Tumors contain complex mixtures of cell populations that evolve in response to treatment and host-specific factors. Tissue biopsies provide only static snapshots of a tumor’s state. But what if we could follow that evolution over time using a minimally invasive technique?

Liquid biopsies can detect tumor-derived material circulating in the bloodstream, providing a way to study treatment response, detect emerging resistance, and discover new biomarkers. Circulating
