    Mapping miRNA without sequencing ?

    Hi,

    Some colleges of mine have been doing a RNA-seq from Atlantic salmon liver and we are planning to sequence miRNA in the same samples.

    But, isn't it possible to map known miRNAs (downloaded from miRBase) to the UTRs in the previously sequenced mRNA in silico ?

    Does anyone of you have experience with this and could recommend me some software?

    Or do we have to sequence the miRNA no matter what?

    The first step is collection, followed by preservation and sample preparation for analysis. Most scientists overlook those steps, but not being careful might just be skewing the experiment’s results.
