The NIHR Biomedical Research Centre at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and King's College London
Guy's and St Thomas' is one of the largest hospital trusts in the country, with a staff of almost 12,000, a turnover of over £1 billion and one million patient contacts a year. The Biomarkers, Co-Diagnostics & Imaging Cluster provides interdisciplinary skills in biomarker discovery, biobanking, co-diagnostics, imaging and proof of principle clinical trials. Translational Genetics will transform the impact of translational biomarker research. The Cluster will provide an integrated platform for a step change in innovative development of novel biomarkers and co-diagnostics. Three initial programmes including Biomarkers and Co-diagnostics in chronic inflammatory disease and transplantation; Biomarkers in Cardiovascular (CV) Disease and Multimodality cancer imaging will take advantage of expertise in disease relevant pathways and biobanking to establish correlative biomarkers with clinical interventions in an iterative learn and confirm approach.
This is a high profile role to lead the BRC’s Bioinformatics Core within the Biomarkers, Co-diagnostics, Imaging and Devices Cluster (BCID). The successful applicant will be responsible for both the development of the strategic direction of the Core and overseeing the daily operations of its staff, including prioritisation of their workload. You will be responsible for delivering high level bioinformatics support, data management and data security to researchers, and will advise on the design and execution of research programmes and administration of the BRC computational cluster.
You will be encouraged to develop original analytical approaches to BRC research programmes and will play a major role in developing solutions for the large amount of DNA / RNA microarray and sequencing data being generated in the Genomics Core Facility, particularly in relation to next-generation sequencing."
In addition, you will proactively monitor developments in bioinformatics analysis and provide strategic advice to the BCID Cluster Board on the acquisition of new software and storage platforms to ensure that the core provides state-of-the-art bioinformatic services, and be required to develop business plans for the Core. Development of strategic links with the Bioinformatic Team at the South London & Maudsley/Institute of Psychiatry’s Biomedical Research Centre and Biomedical Research Unit in Dementia is also a key role.
You will possess extensive bioinformatic analysis experience in an NHS/academic or industry R&D environment and have considerable experience of managing a bioinformatic core facility. Educated to PhD level or equivalent in an appropriate discipline (e.g., computer science, bioinformatics, mathematics, you will be able to demonstrate significant proficiency with relational databases (MySQL or similar) and programming in Perl, Python or Java (or equivalent).
You will possess excellent communication and negotiating skills and be able to demonstrate a track record of effective leadership, providing clear focus and direction and translating strategic plans into individual and team goals and objectives.
