--best --strata in paired end alignments using Bowtie

Does anyone know why the --best --strata options are not valid when working with paired-end reads?

This is a very useful parameter, since the analysis of my data requires to allow multi-mappers, but only those with the top alignment score.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!
