Can one download a file from an FTP server unsing aspera?

I'm not sure I understand fully the concept of ascp.

Is it possible to use ascp to get files on an FTP server, or does the server have to be "aspera" in order to use the command to get files from it?

In other words, can I speed up the download of anything once I have ascp?

There is a server component for Aspera/fasp.

The site you are downloading from needs to be running aspera server which is a commercial product (e.g. SRA @ NCBI) in order for you to be able to use the aspera client for downloads.
