fasta header

Good morning everyone

I have fasta file with this kind of header

>seq1 average3.30
ACTGACTGACTG
>seq3 average5.0
ACTGACTGACTG

how to remove the whitespace together with the word average### leaving only >seq1, i dont want to rename the whole header as i want to maintain the count no (the no is not running)..thanks

For a file called "foo.fa", try:

cat foo.fa | cut -f 1 -d " " > foo.cleaned.fa
