  • Automated Literature search

    Hi there,

I am about starting my PhD. During my Masters I usually looked for new papers in the respective field 'by hand'. This, since I don't have the time now, has to change. Is there any good, convinient to have those literature search automated. By that i don't mean downloading papers automatically, it's more something like RSS feeds...

    Thanks in advance,

    Phil

You can save searches in pubmed and then receive email updates with links to the papers as they get indexed. This is one rather convenient way to do things.

You can also use PubCrawler (http://pubcrawler.gen.tcd.ie/).
You create an account, set up queries, set up a schedule (e.g. literature searches to be performed every Sunday evening) and configure the automated results emails (if you want for example to receive all abstracts or just titles and URLs). Truly a priceless service.

          CGWB Trawler from NCI ...

Be sure to allow pop ups.

This hits major sites including the big journals. Many search engines don't do a "deep search", but the journals themselves provide searches which include, for instance, the supplemental information. You can often access it throught the journal's search page. Trawler automates things so you don't have to navigate by hand to dozens of different sites.

Example, if you're looking for a certain gene, in this case SEC61G

These links can be hacked so you can, for instance, put them in a spreadsheet; i.e. as a field in your output so you can check out what the gene does.

Anybody need improvements, let me know hereabouts!

I love PubCrawler, I've been using it for many years.
You can also set up alerts in Google Scholar (to be notified when a paper cites one of your articles for instance...)

Recent Advances in Sequencing Analysis Tools
              by seqadmin

The sequencing world is rapidly changing due to declining costs, enhanced accuracies, and the advent of newer, cutting-edge instruments. Equally important to these developments are improvements in sequencing analysis, a process that converts vast amounts of raw data into a comprehensible and meaningful form. This complex task requires expertise and the right analysis tools. In this article, we highlight the progress and innovation in sequencing analysis by reviewing several of the...

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
              by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...
