    help with FTP

    Hi,
    This is a dumb thing.
I cannot mirror ftp on shell.

below is the FTP url I want to mirror/access,

    ftp://ftp.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/blast/exe...blast+/LATEST/

    But I cannot do that.
    Code:
    >ftp ftp.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/blast/executables/blast+/
when I try above command, I get error:
    Code:
    ?Invalid command
    I am lost with this.

Kindly help with these basic shell commands.
    Thank you.

The original command (from the command line) should just be: "ftp ftp://ftp.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/blast/executables/blast+/".

Err, that's unlikely. What you probably did was type that inside ftp (i.e., you started running the ftp program and then typed that from its prompt). The likelihood that you would have gotten that had you typed it from the shell is effectively 0, unless you're using same weird OS like windows. Try opening a new terminal window/console/whatever and start again.

          I am using Ubuntu 13.10
          bash terminal

          commands typed:
          1) ftp
          enters into ftp window
          Then:

          2) ftp ftp.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/blast/executables/blast+/
          gives me error

          3) ftp ftp://ftp.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/blast/executables/blast+/
          gives me same error

          4) ftp ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/blast/executables/blast+/
          gives me same error.

          Any idea(s)?

                Still getting the same.
                I tried the remaining commands.

                Thank you for help.

I never liked ftp much. Instead, to mirror, I'd just:
                  Code:
                  wget ftp://ftp.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/blast/executables/blast+/LATEST/*
PS IMO making custom blast databases was nicer with 2.2.28+ than with 2.2.29+, that's why I rolled back. The latest makeblastdb is a pain..

PPS your #3 works as long as you're not already in ftp..

                    You might try:

                    In bash or similar:
                    $ ftp

                    # now in FTP
                    > open ftp.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov
                    > cd blast/executables/blast+/2.2.28
                    > ls
                    > get APPROPRIATE_FILE_HERE

From Collection to Sequencing: Why Sample Preparation and Preservation Define Sequencing Data
                      by SEQadmin2

Data variability is still an issue in sequencing technologies despite the advances in reproducibility and accuracy of these platforms. But the problem does not originate in the sequencing itself, but in the previous steps, before the sample reaches the sequencer.

The first step is collection, followed by preservation and sample preparation for analysis. Most scientists overlook those steps, but not being careful might just be skewing the experiment’s results.

Single-Cell Sequencing at an Inflection Point: Early Impacts of New Platforms and Emerging Trends
                      by SEQadmin2

With the launch of new single-cell sequencing platforms in 2026, the field stands at an exciting inflection point. This article surveys the most impactful advances in the field and discusses how they’re reshaping research in cancer, immunology, and beyond.

                      Introduction

Single-cell sequencing technologies have undergone remarkable advances over the past decade, transitioning from low-throughput experimental approaches to highly scalable platforms capable of...

Environmental Genomics in the Age of NGS: From Microbes to Conservation Strategies
                      by SEQadmin2

Studying ecosystems means dealing with complex, multi-species communities that are hard to observe at scale. This complexity, however, hides many important questions to be answered, from how biogeochemical cycles work and how climate change can affect species distribution to how conservation strategies can work best.

Genomics, particularly since the expansion of NGS, has transformed ecosystem ecology. By sequencing environmental DNA, we can now assess biodiversity without direct...
