sam file as input in velvet

Hi,
I running velveth with sam file as input. I get the following error.

Segmentation fault (core dumped)

I dont get any error when I run the velveth with fasta file as input.

Here is the command.
velveth /data/../dir_17 17 -sam -short /data/.../xyz.sam

Am I missing some thing?

Segmentation faults are often caused by running out of memory.

Is the sam file much larger than the fasta file?
