tview error- "fail to load BAM index"

Hello all, I'm getting this error when I attempt to run the following command with samtools:

    "$ samtools tview chrom5.sorted.bam chrom5.fas

[bam_index_load] fail to load BAM index."

I'm able to do other things with the .sorted.bam file, like use the pileup command. Any ideas or suggestions?

    samtools index chrom5.sorted.bam

will create a bam index (*.bam.bai file)

If you haven't done it before, this might be the problem

Yes, that indeed fixed the problem.
So, in the "teach a man to fish" vein, what exactly does the index command do? I saw that it created the .bam.bai file, which was only 12 KB. The documentation in the manual for the command is as follows:

      "index samtools index <aln.bam>

Index sorted alignment for fast random access. Index file <aln.bam>.bai will be created."

Just curious what the general purpose of this command is. I was able to run the pileup command with just my .sorted.bam file, without first running index. Is there a general way to know if you need the .bam.bai file?

Multiomic Liquid Biopsy: What DNA/RNA Panels Reveal That DNA Alone Can’t
        by SEQadmin2

Tumors contain complex mixtures of cell populations that evolve in response to treatment and host-specific factors. Tissue biopsies provide only static snapshots of a tumor’s state. But what if we could follow that evolution over time using a minimally invasive technique?

Liquid biopsies can detect tumor-derived material circulating in the bloodstream, providing a way to study treatment response, detect emerging resistance, and discover new biomarkers. Circulating

New Genomics Technologies Take Aim at Long-Standing Limits
        by SEQadmin2

Researchers using sequencing and genomics tools often have to make trade-offs. They can choose between speed or scale, short reads or long-range information, or targeted panels or a view of the whole transcriptome. New technologies that have been released this year are built to address those tough choices.

We asked six companies the same four questions to learn about their latest products. The new technologies bring a lot to the table, including rethinking sequencing
