    Suggested Tablet for Core facility

I work in a Core DNA sequencing lab and wondered if anyone has incorporated use of a tablet into their day-to-day work? If so, what type of tablet seemed to work best, what kind of qualities were you looking for?

What else do you need to connect to/use?

If you are in a windows-based shop then most new windows tablets (which can be joined to the domain if administration/security is a consideration) with full windows (not RT) would work. If you are worried about spilling stuff toughpads from Panasonic may be a good albeit expensive option.

I think the main connector is going to be a barcode scanner to track lot numbers so I don't think it even needs to be that large. I will look at toughpads, thanks.

My question about the connections was in terms of websites/programs (LIMS) etc. that you need/plan to use.

Some tablets have a scanner built in or for you could use the camera as a 1D barcode scanner (not sure if it will do 2D).

We use Microsoft Surface tablets. They're powerful enough to do pretty much anything we'll need to do at the lab bench, they have good connectivity, and ease of use and application support is also good. You can use barcode scanning software (although we don't) for scanning any type of barcode via the camera. You can also plug in a USB or bluetooth barcode scanner, if that suits better.

Love this - good data definitely starts from good input, and poor input can only give relatively poor data. I particularly like the mention of Nanodrop/absorbance based methods for quantification. It's such a toss up if you'll get an accurate reading or what amounts to a randomly generated number, and a lot of library/sequencing related issues can be traced back to poor quant.

Nine Things a Sample Prep Scientist Thinks About Before Sequencing
              by SEQadmin2

I’m not a sequencing expert. I’m a purification scientist who uses NGS to evaluate workflows my group develops. With this perspective, we think about the sample first and the NGS workflow second. The sequencer is an exceptionally honest reporter, but it can only report on what you give it, so whether you get clean, interpretable data from an NGS workflow is largely determined before you begin.

Here are nine questions we think about, in roughly the order they matter, before...
