On June 4, 2012 in Philadelphia, Cambridge Healthtech Institute will host its "Next Generation Sequencing as a Diagnostics Platform" course. The focus of this short course will be on understanding the use of NGS in clinical diagnosis, practical implementation of NGS in clinical laboratories and analysis of large data sets by using bioinformatics tools to parse and interpret data in relation to the clinical phenotype.
Faculty:
Madhuri Hegde, Ph.D., FACMG, Associate Professor, Senior Director, Emory Genetics Laboratory, Department of Human Genetics, Emory University School of Medicine.
Birgit Funke, PhD, FACMG, Assistant Professor of Pathology, MGH/Harvard Medical School, Director Clinical Research and Development, Laboratory for Molecular Medicine, Partners HealthCare Center for Personalized Genetic Medicine.
The course will be held prior to the start of CHI's Innovative Tissue-Based Diagnostics conference.

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist on Modified Bases...-

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...-
