    Dear All,
Registration for a "DBT sponsored Cancer Informatics Workshop: Next Generation Data Analysis" at ACTREC, Tata Memorial Center from Jan 28-30, 2013 is open.

This 3 day workshop will be conducted by Dr. Amit Dutt, Scientist E and Prof, Wellcome Trust DBT Intermediate Fellow, ACTREC, Tata Memorial Center (http://www.actrec.gov.in/pi-webpages...utt_index.html), from January 28-30, 2013 along with 4 ACTREC faculties as the core organizing committee, and 8 additional leading national faculties from India: Dr. Alok Bhattacharya, JNU (New Delhi); Dr. Arindam Maitra, NIBMG (Calcutta); Dr. Binay Panda, Ganit Labs (Bangalore); Dr. Dasaradhi Palakodeti, InSTEM (Bangalore); Dr. Farhat Habib IISER (Pune); Mr. Nikhil Gadewal, ACTREC (Mumbai); Dr. Randeep Singh, Phillips Research Asia (Bangalore); Dr. Saumyadipta Pyne, AIMSCS (Hyderabad); Ms. Sunita Manjarai, C-DAC (Pune).

There will be series of lectures (open to all) followed by hands-on-training on actual data using customized analytical pipeline. The workshop is primarily designed for academic investigators (at all levels) involved in cancer research to acquire the skills required to analyse next generation sequence (NGS), expression array and SNP array data sets. Users will learn to run command-line tools under Linux and use GATK tool kit for variant discovery, annotations, and data quality analysis with statistical considerations to identify driver mutations. SNP array and expression array workshop modules will use the data analysis environment R/ Bioconductor. No prior knowledge of R would be required for attending this workshop, though desirable.

The course is open for 20 registered participants, last date for applying is Jan 3, 2013. Selection is based on the submitted abstracts and letters of support. Selected candidates will receive travel awards to attend the work shop and complementary accommodation in Navi Mumbai. Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...

    Strategies for Sequencing Challenging Samples
    by seqadmin

Despite advancements in sequencing platforms and related sample preparation technologies, certain sample types continue to present significant challenges that can compromise sequencing results. Pedro Echave, Senior Manager of the Global Business Segment at Revvity, explained that the success of a sequencing experiment ultimately depends on the amount and integrity of the nucleic acid template (RNA or DNA) obtained from a sample. “The better the quality of the nucleic acid isolated...
