  • Best literature on NGS

    Hi,

what is you favourite literature about (especially the bioinformatic part of) NGS, both de novo and with a reference genome?

    Best literature on NGS

    Hi,

I don't know about 'best' or 'favourite', but review articles are usually a good place to start.

Nature Methods had a supplement on NGS in 2009. It included an article on alignment and assembly by Paul Flicek and Ewan Birney.

There was a Technology Feature article in Nature Methods about a year ago,
called 'De novo genome assembly, what every biologist should know',

The journal Bioinformatics had a virtual issue on NGS - essentially a list of NGS papers published in their journal,

There have been various articles comparing different assemblers, including articles reporting the results of Assemblathon competitions.

See this article by Salzberg et al, 'GAGE: A critical evaluation of genome assemblies and assembly algorithms.'

An international, peer-reviewed genome sciences journal featuring outstanding original research that offers novel insights into the biology of all organisms

    Best wishes,
    Maria

Thank you very much, Maria! I will check these articles.

I am asking because we are going to buy some books at the department now. So we googled some books about NGS and I can also check the reviews at Amazon but I wanted to know if anyone here uses some and can recommend them.

        Best literature on NGS

I think the best sources of information on NGS are the journals, SEQanswers, and the technical reports published by the various companies that sell sequencers like Illumina, Life and Roche/454 (see their websites).

I would imagine that because of the speed at which everything NGS-related is changing, any textbooks would be out of date by the time they are published.

Recent Advances in Sequencing Analysis Tools
          by seqadmin

The sequencing world is rapidly changing due to declining costs, enhanced accuracies, and the advent of newer, cutting-edge instruments. Equally important to these developments are improvements in sequencing analysis, a process that converts vast amounts of raw data into a comprehensible and meaningful form. This complex task requires expertise and the right analysis tools. In this article, we highlight the progress and innovation in sequencing analysis by reviewing several of the...

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
          by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...
