  • Genapsys Raises $37M to Commercialize Next Generation Sequencing Platform

"Nano-electronic" sequencer whose goal is to achieve 1kb reads by reading changes in both pH and temperature: http://venturebeat.com/2013/11/14/yu...into-genapsys/

    Any specifics on the technology?

Illumina has a 12 billion market cap and a significant lead.

      Not many specifics:

"The "Gene Electronic Nano-Integrated Ultra-Sensitive" (GENIUS) platform is based on innovative technologies to provide significant improvements in cost, accuracy, read length, throughput and ease of use relative to current state-of-art systems. The overall goal is to develop a sequencing system using nano-magnetic-electronic platforms. We are proposing a system that integrates sample preparation and enrichment steps with the sequencing module. Sample preparation will rely on a re-usable magnetic-electronic chip and a novel emulsion-free amplification method. After amplification, enrichment of template carrying monoclonal beads is achieved through 'sorting' based on DNA charge. Beads are then transferred and held on a micromagnet array integrated with a sequencing sensor chip consisting of high-density arrays of CMOS-based nano-electronic sensors for direct detection of extension reactions. "

We've been keeping track of them over in our 'Emerging Technologies' section of the NGS Knowledge Bank: http://allseq.com/knowledgebank/emer...gies/genapsys/

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
          by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...

          Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
          by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
