How hard is it to do independent publishable bioinformatics/RNA-Seq research?

So I'm wondering - how hard is it to do independent publishable bioinformatics research with just a laptop? Is there precedent for it? Is it a trend we'll see more in the future?

I don't need to be paid for this - someone else is willing to support me.

Eventually, I'm thinking of maybe looking into RNA-Seq datasets from https://www.liv.ac.uk/integrative-bi...-de-magalhaes/, as I'm very interested in aging.

It depends a lot on the nature of the research. Some things are CPU bound, others RAM, others disk IO. I generally use my laptop to work on a larger computer remotely. BTW, get two monitors.

Okay. How would getting two monitors be helpful?

It's typically the case in bioinformatics that you need a lot of screen space while doing an analysis/writing code. It's really the same reason most software engineers use two monitors.

16S/ITS Profiling vs. Shotgun Metagenomics: What Changes in Your Workflow?
          by SEQadmin2

NGS has revolutionized clinical microbiology by offering new ways to identify and surveil pathogens without prior knowledge of the target. One popular approach is 16S rRNA and ITS amplicon sequencing, which targets specific microbial markers. But studies are increasingly incorporating shotgun metagenomics, a technique that sequences all DNA from a sample without targeting specific microbial markers. This approach allows more detailed taxonomic classification, detection...

Multiomic Liquid Biopsy: What DNA/RNA Panels Reveal That DNA Alone Can’t
          by SEQadmin2

Tumors contain complex mixtures of cell populations that evolve in response to treatment and host-specific factors. Tissue biopsies provide only static snapshots of a tumor’s state. But what if we could follow that evolution over time using a minimally invasive technique?

Liquid biopsies can detect tumor-derived material circulating in the bloodstream, providing a way to study treatment response, detect emerging resistance, and discover new biomarkers. Circulating
