    Hello and Perl Question

    Hello All,

I'm new to the forum and currently working on a Master in Bioinformatics.

A question I had for the group is, what text or manual would you recommend to someone beginning to learn Perl programming?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Thank you,
    Alex

    Hi alex95037,

I would highly recommend this free Unix and Perl primer for Biologists from the Korf Lab.

I knew no Unix or Perl before downloading this short course onto a USB memory drive and found it very easy to follow. It guides you through the basics, using example scripts that are relevant to biology/genetics, and leaves you with sufficient knowledge and confidence to find further solutions and knowledge from google searches.

I still refer back to the text/manual that they provide and have passed it on to other lab members who have found it equally easy to follow.

    Good luck,
    Richard

        Hello Richard,

Thank you for the link. I have downloaded the notes/data files and I plan to start reading through the material on my Ubuntu PC. So far looks very promising.

        Thanks again,
        Alex

          Hello kmcarr,

Thank you for the link to the Perl manual. I have placed an order for the book and should be receiving it in a couple of days. This manual was recommended to me by several people.

          Best,
          Alex

Multiomic Liquid Biopsy: What DNA/RNA Panels Reveal That DNA Alone Can’t
            by SEQadmin2

Tumors contain complex mixtures of cell populations that evolve in response to treatment and host-specific factors. Tissue biopsies provide only static snapshots of a tumor’s state. But what if we could follow that evolution over time using a minimally invasive technique?

Liquid biopsies can detect tumor-derived material circulating in the bloodstream, providing a way to study treatment response, detect emerging resistance, and discover new biomarkers. Circulating

New Genomics Technologies Take Aim at Long-Standing Limits
            by SEQadmin2

Researchers using sequencing and genomics tools often have to make trade-offs. They can choose between speed or scale, short reads or long-range information, or targeted panels or a view of the whole transcriptome. New technologies that have been released this year are built to address those tough choices.

We asked six companies the same four questions to learn about their latest products. The new technologies bring a lot to the table, including rethinking sequencing
