    Hello and introductions

First and foremost I would like to thank the developers, admin and participants for this site. Thank you.

I'm a veteran research molecular biologist currently retooling my skill set.
I typically hand samples to a facility core and anxiously wait for the data. Analysis consists of plugging that data into an application to ID genes, pathways, etc. for model building and manuscript prep.

I want to develop a working knowledge of the complete data analysis process of current sequencing technologies. This includes a thorough understanding of the algorithms used. I am developing computer programming skills. I currently have some working knowledge of Python, Unix Bash- and C-shell scripting and C++.

Currently I'm doing an independent study of computational biology and that what brings me to this site. I've already recognized that this forum is an excellent window into the next-gen sequencing arena.

My first question then will be: What is the best way to get real-data analysis experience without being in a sequencing lab?

Although, I have interest in all aspects of sequence analysis, I have a specific interest in genome assembly and annotation, gene-protein prediction/ID and metabolic pathway analysis.

    Thanks again!

    Hello!

I am new here too! I can reply, but how do you create a new thread?

If you go directly to the top level of the forum you want (in this case it would be "Introductions"), you'll see a button called "New Thread" in the lower left hand corner. Click on that and you should be all set.

Advanced Sequencing Platforms Tackle Neuroscience’s Toughest Genomics Problems
        by SEQadmin2

Genomics studies in neuroscience face a special challenge due to the brain’s complexity and scarcity of samples. Mapping changes in cell type and state using conventional next-generation sequencing methods remains challenging. Advances in technologies like single-cell sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, and long-read sequencing have opened the door to deeper studies of the brain and diseases like Alzheimer’s, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and schizophrenia.

Cancer Drug Resistance: The Lingering Barrier to Rising Survival
        by SEQadmin2

Cancer survival rates have significantly increased in the last few decades in the United States, reaching a combined 70% 5-year survival rate by 2021. Behind this number, there are years of research to find new therapies, drug targets, and early detection methods. But there is one core challenge that keeps slowing down these advances, and it’s about drug resistance.

There is no single reason why many patients don’t respond to treatment as expected. Cancer is...

Reply to Nine Things a Sample Prep Scientist Thinks About Before Sequencing

Love this - good data definitely starts from good input, and poor input can only give relatively poor data. I particularly like the mention of Nanodrop/absorbance based methods for quantification. It's such a toss up if you'll get an accurate reading or what amounts to a randomly generated number, and a lot of library/sequencing related issues can be traced back to poor quant.
